Boston Globe Opinion Piece
14 year member of Massport board and former Boston Transportation Commissioner and leaves out Worcester Airport. Speaks volumes!!!! Unbelievable..
Correction: ORH was mentioned
“ Massport’s commendable efforts to optimize Worcester Airport’s air service potential have clearly demonstrated that Worcester is best suited as a general aviation airport, due to airside and groundside constraints.”
Commentary by John Vitagliano: Logan, T.F. Green, and Manchester airports could operate cooperatively to serve the needs of the region, writes former 14-year member of the Massport board and former Boston Transportation Commissioner. https://t.co/z9hvaJjbOm

The writer actually does mention ORH but mostly as an afterthought to his proposal. Here’s what he wrote…
“ Massport’s commendable efforts to optimize Worcester Airport’s air service potential have clearly demonstrated that Worcester is best suited as a general aviation airport, due to airside and groundside constraints.”
I wouldn’t call MassPort’s efforts at ORH commendable.
I think we can all agree that Massport taking this airport over has been an absolute failure. I don’t understand what they mean by “airside and groundside constraints”. There’s 1,000 acres up there. Maybe if they spent some decent $$$ marketing the airport and worked with the city to improve access to the airport they wouldn’t have these issues. Basically they’ve been feeding everyone a pile of crap for the last 15 years about their intentions for ORH. It wouldn’t take much to make ORH successful. For starters, get an airline in here that flies to destinations that people want to go. As crappy as their business model was, Direct Air had no problem selling tickets out of ORH. I know because I flew on Direct Air several times out of ORH and the planes were always full or damn near close to it. There should be an investigation into Massport’s handling of ORH. Literally hundreds of millions spent and now they say there’s too many constraints??? Not sure about you but I would think before spending the kind of money they have at ORH they would have done a little homework first. What a joke. And no one will hold them accountable either because this is Massachusetts and accountability isn’t part of the vocabulary of any of our elected officials.
Former state of Ma head of transportation John Vitagliano suggested regional partnerships with TF Green, Logan, Manchester, but leaves out Worcester airport. Article is in Boston.com. 44 million flew out Logan airport last year. Worcester passenger count is less than a quarter percent of that. Boston wants it all, the hotels, the restaurants etc. Someone should build a nice hotel on the Worcester airport property area. The hotel would boost passenger count. JB should have announced Worcester to Tampa three days a week. JB would have to put a JB crew at Worcester instead of sub contractors, that may be the hold up.
