Lost JetBlue to JFK

Read Time:1 Minute, 8 Second

It was never made very clear during the recent Orlando/Fort Myers announcement, but the day before the Orlando flights starts, JFK ends with JetBlue. Actually did not understand that to be the case, but again great comments by the followers on this blog!!!!

Agree that when you look at it overall this could be seen as a loss. On the other hand, this JFK flight and the possibilities it provided were never marketed correctly and I do not see that changing. Maybe it is best to just pull the plug on JFK and follow the Tweed/Avelo model and make Worcester the direct leisure flight airport to places in Florida, Myrtle Beach and San Juan.

At the same time, pretty amazing how this fact was left out during the press conference. More alarming, however, is Rusty’s comment (last post), JetBlue will only fly three flights (FLL, MCO, RSW) to avoid having to bring in their own crew? In other words there will be no more destinations from JetBlue!!!

If this is in fact true then we need an airline like Avelo to fill in the Florida destinations JetBlue does not service. Our goal needs to have our route map mirror that of Tweed in New Haven and there is no reason why we can not get 1,000,000 passengers over 15 months like them.

  1. Do you really believe an airline will restrict the number of flights to avoid insourcing personnel? Profit is the deciding factor. Period. They pulled JFK for 2 reasons. Primarily, because they’re downsizing JFK because they can’t depend on reliable FAA manning in the JFK towers and the increased summer flight schedule is going to cause gridlock, dominoing into the JetBlue system as JFK is their biggest city. Secondly, I’m sure they’re pulling from their least profitable markets. And don’t give me that “no marketing” BS. People know JetBlue flies out of ORH….. just look how successful FLL is and MCO was and will be again. People just didn’t support the JFK flights. Rusty, you’re forgiven for missing the JFK pull down at first. You’re usually spot on. I’m surprised you haven’t picked up one good point about the JFK RON going away….. Massport should be pleased that it will give them more time to close the runways to pave this summer! Maybe that’s another reason JetBlue pulled the plug on that flight so soon? In Rusty we trust!

  2. JetBlue can easily add more flights. They just need to bring in their own staff OR (more realistically) change the contract. Adding more flights isn’t that difficult, it just requires some logistical changes. If MCO/RSW/FLL sell 80%+ loads (as everyone predicts they will), there’s no reason JB couldn’t make the necessary logistical changes to add more leisure flights.

  3. Jetblue has been at ORH for 10 years. If they were so committed to ORH then they’d have many more flights here than they do now. It’s just further proof that the only reason any airline is at ORH is to appease Massport to get what they want at Logan. American had 9% passenger loads one month. Airlines don’t stick around with loads like that. But yeah, $250 million on a parallel taxiway will solve everything. At some point American and Delta are going to decide that it isn’t worth it to continually hemorrhage $$$ like they are at ORH.

I’d like to know if all the politicians that lined up for photo ops at the celebration of new service this past Monday knew that the JFK flights would be cut. I’d also like to know how much money they wasted on that “event”. Seems like Massport has plenty of $$$ to put on shows so the politicians can show up to get a photo taken but they can’t spend some money on promoting the airport a little more??? There are comments on the Twitter account for this blog from people that are saying they didn’t know flying out of Worcester was an option. Drive around the city or in the surrounding towns and main roadways. Can anyone say that they see anything in regard to marketing of ORH??? Obviously whatever little marketing plan they were doing isn’t working. Meanwhile, literally every other airport around us large and small are adding service while we get very little other that Massport continuing to dump $$$ into this money pit.

  4. Worcester airport to Logan is the same distance from Bradley airport to Tweed in New Haven Ct, the difference is they are flying a start up airline that is running specials on the website and advertising like crazy all over the southern part of Ct. I fly to FLL twice a month because I own a home there and many people from central Ma do as well. Off the top of my head I know over 50 people ( Many of them Mosaic Members) that own condo’s/homes in FLL metro area. I notice on my flight to and from FLL many of the same people. I also notice over the last ten years many more people from central Ma are heading to FLL in the summer, especially the property owners. In my opinion two flights a day to FLL would do well. Worcester needs Breeze or Avelo, they will make a big splash with website specials and tons of local advertisement. The big splash from one of the two start up airlines would help the current airlines, the splash would do the heavy lifting for the others. The Orlando flight should do well, JB has two connecting flights to the Dominican Republic twice a day, two flights to Punta Cana and Two flights to SDQ the capital. In regards to the west coast flight most of the people from the midwest part of the US go to the west coast of FLL, hopefully the flight does well! The Dominican Republic tourism is going crazy, people from all over the world are buying homes/condo’s there, S. Florida is just to expensive. JB need to promote the connections to the Caribbean from Worcester. I want Worcester airport to prosper, it’s so convient you don’t want to fly out of Boston.
