Polar Park Update

Read Time:58 Second

If you look at an old posts, you will see this was predicted years ago.

Click here to read a few of them!!

For now look at Tuesday night’s transmittal (click here) to City Council.

Although I have seen the number of $792,000 having to be taken from the General Fund to cover the Polar Park bond payments, it seems alot worse than that. Look at page 4:

“In FT23, The DIF finished the year with approximately $2,700,000 million in reserves, and in FY24 the DIF finished with with approximately $235,000 in reserve.”

  • That’s a cut of $2,465,000!!
  • We withdrew $2,465,000 in reserves and we were still $792,000 short.
  • Next year we only have $235,000 left!!

FY 2025, not looking good, considering the reserves is down to $235,000. and don’t forget the debt we pay back is on an ascending scale so every year the payments increase.

FY 2024 6,240,690

FY 2025 6,438,448

Next year, without $2,465,000 from reserves, it seems General Fund may have to pay millions to cover the Polar Park bond payment shortage.

  1. Sell the park! Take a loss and move on. Minor league baseball is not relevant. Players come and go. Fans go to the red Sox games to watch the two or three outstanding players. The park did well during Covid because there nothing else to do. All outside venues did well. Party is over. Bye now!

  2. I go to Polar Park to see the WooSox 12 – 15 times a year and just about every game I have been to, has been jam packed. The city might not be making much money over there, but someone is getting rich. The WooSox were also the first team in minor league history to have attendance of 500,000 people or more for 3 consecutive years. The city clearly negotiated a crappy deal to lure the team here from Pawtucket but there isn’t anything they can do about that now. I can’t see someone buying the park because they would have to take on the crappy deal that the city approved. If it’s that much of a bad deal we need to vote out the councilors that voted in favor of the deal that was given but that will never happen.

As for Worcester Airport, it’s a joke. I saw the WBJ article and that was nothing but a bunch of talking points from Massport. They said that Avelo and Breeze both looked at ORH but decided against starting service there. Would be good to know why. The proximity to Logan thing is just another talking point. Avelo and Breeze have no problem setting up at other airports that are all within 40 or 50 miles of each other. My guess is that at least one of them was likely interested in starting some kind of service but Massport probably made ridiculous demands and the airlines told them to take a hike.

    Have a good Thanksgiving everyone!

  3. I try to vote out the council, but I’m one conservative vote among all the die hard votes. Council members get life appointments in Worcester. The city has another hack trying to make a come back because he failed at his business. Worcester will always be third string. The poor tax payer in Worcester can’t carry the park. Minor league baseball is not relevant. Tweed is growing like crazy in New Haven, thats a city like Worcester, dumpy and about the same distance to Hartford as Boston to Worcester. New Haven has the PIZZA!

    I’m Thankful for this blog!
